Integrated water management and governance

With a population of more than 1.4 billion, India’s urban water demands have surged more than 70% compared to previous decades. These are expected to double by 2050. The 2011 census found that on an average only 69 lpcd of municipal water is supplied in urban areas.

Integrated Water Management and Governance focuses on managing water holistically across sources like surface water, groundwater, rainwater and wastewater. It considers both quality and quantity. This framework also promotes coordination between stakeholders, sectors and institutions to ensure equitable, sustainable and efficient water use.
