Mysuru is known for its heritage and planned urban form. The city has historically benefited from surface water sourced from the KRS dam on River Cauvery. While it enjoys relatively high per capita water supply, growing urbanization and population pressures have resulted in increasing groundwater extraction. This is especially the case in peripheral areas, where municipal supply is limited.
Rainwater harvesting has been promoted. Parts of the city are exploring decentralized wastewater treatment. Mysuru also boasts of several urban lakes like Kukkarahalli, Lingambudhi and Karanji Kere. These act as vital ecological buffers. However, these waterbodies increasingly face encroachment and sewage inflows.
