ABOUT

Urban Waters – Ahmedabad

Located in a semi-arid region, Ahmedabad faces mounting water challenges due to rapid expansion, climate variability, and over reliance of water from the Narmada Canal. The city’s groundwater table is getting steadily depleted.

Simultaneously, increasing impermeable surfaces have reduced natural recharge. Untreated wastewater continues to pollute River Sabarmati and the city’s drains. Despite this, Ahmedabad has taken strides in water reuse. It operates one of India’s largest sewage treatment and reuse plants at Pirana. This supplies treated water for industrial use.
