ABOUT

Urban Waters – Mumbai

Mumbai sources its water from seven (7) lakes. Of these, the Bhatsa and the Upper Vaitarana contribute the maximum. Despite this, the city faces chronic water stress, especially in the informal settlements. Non-revenue water loss from leakages and theft exceed 25%. Over 70% of the city’s wastewater is discharged into the Arabian sea. Mumbai also faces urban flooding due to encroachments, clogged drains, and tidal backflows.

Policies mandate RWH and wastewater treatment. However, implementation remains inconsistent, just like in most of the country’s cities. Mumbai has begun exploring wastewater reuse for industrial purposes. The city is also investing in large-scale treatment upgrades. To build resilience, Mumbai needs to embrace decentralized water management systems and approaches. It must also protect urban wetlands, and prioritize equitable access.
